December 12 is the celebration  in Mexico of Our Lady of Guadalupe (also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe)

A Native Mexican peasant Juan Diego has four apparitions by the Holy Virgin Mary who appeared one more time to Juan Diego’s uncle. According to Catholic accounts the first apparition occurred on the morning of December 9, 1531,  at a place called the Hill of Tepeyac, a suburb of Mexico City. Speaking to him in his native Nahuatl  language the maiden identified herself a “mother of the very true deity” and asked for a church to be built at that site in her honor.

The Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes once said that “you cannot truly be considered a Mexican unless you believe in the Virgin of Guadalupe.”
